MILKED Issue One, Ashley Johnson
MILKED Issue One offers a broad, voluminous stroke of motherhood, questioning, “Does contemporary art ever talk about the thin line of identity between the maternal being and the being that came out of her? Is anyone talking about the tearing felt between Mother and first-born when the second-born comes along? What of the bodily expansion and spiritual transcendence of birth, the stretching and thinning? What of death? What of the portrait? What of form or weight? And most of all, how can we lessen the words and take a posture of looking?”

art that explores the maternal experience. by women. for culture.
Containing an intentionally curated body of work, conceptually driven, and visually focused, MILKED is a new publication that focuses on the undertones of the maternal figure. Styled like a newspaper, and published like a book, this full color, 8.5” x 14” publication features visual art, photography, installation and writing by international, female artists.
MILKED is an independent, artist-led project initiated & curated by Lee Nowell-Wilson and designed by Darin Michelle. Both artists. Both mothers.
